For several months a friend has been working near Liege, Belgium; recently he tried to take a tour at FNH. Even if FN did allow random tours, they have been known to not allow photos. However, FN has contributed to the local arms museum and so his day was not wasted.

The Musée d’Armes has a website reminiscent of the post-AOL internet home page explosion. This is only notable because this is one of the largest museums of its kind in the world.

I’m told the arms museum was integrated into the Le Grande Curtius (click here for English translation). I was able to confirm this with an official release (PDF) on the reopening of the museum in 2009, after nine years of restoration and expansion. There is a little more information on the Belgian arms collection site LittleGun.be as well as on the site European Route of Industrial Heritage.

From Lonely Planet:

In this neo-classical mansion built in 1775, the Musée d’Armes (opened in 1885) houses a complete collection of armaments. With over 11,000 objects, it’s the second largest of its kind in Europe. As well as getting the lowdown on Liège manufacturing history, we’re treated to such highlights as 15th-century guns, a prehistoric axe and Napoleon memorabilia.

Now zombie movies are everywhere and being produced in just about every country. There are Cuban Zombies, Korean Zombies, Russian Zombies, French Zombies?!?!? You heard right; French Zombies.

The Horde is about average on the gory scale as far as zombie movies are concerned. The premise is that a group of cops are headed to the ghettos to take revenge on a gang that killed one of their fellow officers and kidnapped another one. The political diatribe of this movie isn’t very subtle and in some ways it is justified. The Z.U.P. (Zone a Urbaniser de priorite) or the suburbs were a great idea in theory when they were first built, and there are some in every major city in France. Group housing for everyone that needed it, centralized and readily accessible to major commercial areas. But the buildings decline and fall into disrepair and the foreigners are the only ones who can’t afford to move out. The balance veers toward lower income families. Gangs start to flourish and the cops and government start to ignore the area.

I’ve been in the same kind of buildings that appear in this film, and they are just as bad as they appear in this film. Minus the zombies of course.
I recently watched another film franchise that dealt with the socio-economic problems of the “Banlieues”. District B13 and District 13: Ultimatum, both of these films also served to highlight the socio-economic problem of the ghettos.

The building in this movie is going to be torn down in the near yet undetermined future and most of the residents have moved out save the few who can’t afford to move on. The police sneak in and ready themselves to attack the gang members. They run into the gun toting Super who is still trying to keep things under control. They tell the manager to take a hike and they proceed to rig the door of the gang’s hideout with explosives but the Super comes back and tries to help the cops, only he alerts the gang to the presence of the cops. The cops are taken hostage and are going to be killed but then the zombies start attacking. The rest of the movie the cops and the gang members try to cooperate with each other in order to avoid the attacking zombies.

As I watched this movie I kept thinking of all the times that the elevator wasn’t working in the buildings I’d been in. Not to mention how many times I opted for the stairs when the elevator seemed a riskier choice. The hall lights that were on a timer. “Can I make it to that persons’ door before the lights go out?” becomes a normal, everyday question when you visit one of the buildings in the Z.U.P. Then there is the lovely stench of urine soaked stairwells. Not to mention all the French swear words I picked up by reading the graffiti on the walls. It’s seems highly unlikely that the set designer had to do very much to this building in order to make it into a slum. Chances are very high that there was a building that was ready made.

All of these aforementioned memories and plenty of others made the viewing experience very kinesthetic for me personally, and thus a bit more uncomfortable in nature. It was easy for me to see myself being chased through the poorly lit hallways by zombies. Though the zombies themselves weren’t any scarier than most.

If I lived there, I think I could escape the zombies as long as I didn’t try to take the elevator. The real horror of this movie is the fact that there are real people who have to live in buildings just like that one. In the end the characters of the movie don’t escape the horde of zombies. Hmm, that sounds familiar. It’s like the way life is for most of the people who live in those buildings. No escape!

The Israeli accessory website Zahal.org sells an aluminum handguard rail for the TAR-21.Not long after the release of the new bullpup, Lt Werner has demonstrated that it installs on the Canadain version and most likely on the new USA civilian Tavor SAR. While I have not performed this modification to my own rifle, I do feel it would assist in handling with my isosceles style of rifle shooting.

Unfortunately Zahal doesn’t currently have any other useful Tavor accessories. However, it is only a matter of being patient to see new products come available from TBD sources.

When first holding the new civilian Tavor SAR I was not expecting the lack of ambidextrous safety selector, not after all the ambi-hype I’d heard. While not left handed, I do fire from the weak side enough to appreciate such things, not that I’m any good at doing so. I also appreciate having the muscle memory to pick up any standard AK or AR and have an expectation of controls and function, so I don’t feel tremendously compelled to bedazzle every rifle with bits of glitter and in-fashion accessories. But I doubt I’ll be handling a lot of other Tavors in my life.

SEF Tactical is currently working on a solution. They started with duplicating the original Israeli ambi selector [image below]. Now testing different variations in shape and size to make it the most comfortable on one’s trigger finger.

This movie follows in the footsteps of a long line of “last man on earth” movies. Literally. I was watching this movie and I kept thinking of the Vincent Price flick. I felt very bi-polar while watching this movie. I really liked the first part of the movie, and I was drawn in to believing that he was truly the last man on earth. Mark Dacasos (Renchard) played up the crazy bit very well. He kept popping pills like they were candy and he hallucinated hearing the radio come on at one point. There are also scenes where he is interacting with mannequins and dead zombies that he’s set up in order to have conversations with them. This is fantastic and really drives home the point of being isolated and not having any other humans to talk to. For the first thirty minutes I really believed he was the only one left alive in the world and that he was slowly going insane. I was excited as I wanted to see his sanity degrade.

Even the incoming messages on his computer were something that I thought he was creating in his head. I was very disappointed when I found out that he was actually getting the messages. There was a woman stuck in the city that was contacting him for help.
She apparently is immune to the infection that turns people into zombies. She asked him for help and he said no.

After this is when the movie becomes very bi-polar. It’s the depressive phase, as the first part was the manic phase.
He’s not really all alone. He gets a visit a few days later from two guys who are headed to the city to rescue the girl and they want him to be their guide.
The dramatic drop for depression occurred when they convinced him to go along by blowing up his personal fortress with a rocket launcher. This raised so very many questions. If he was special ops in the army before everyone died, how could he let them do that? And where was his extreme paranoia when he really needed it?

The rest of the movie was really anti-climatic. He goes along tp help rescue the girl. They blew up his house so what’s a guy to do after all? Army guy Mike dies and Vincent stays behind to make sure that his friends’ body doesn’t get eaten. Then Vincent comes back later and takes the woman hostage because he doesn’t really want anyone to be protected. He likes the way the world is now. He leaves Renchard for dead and takes off with the girl and dead Mike.

Renchard of course pulls it together to be the vengeful hero and chases them down. Just in time to save her from the advances of the dead guy. If you watch the movie you will understand what I mean.

Then the movie ends with Renchard and the girl kissing and heading on their way to the rendez-vous point so that the army can create the vaccine.

I wanted the movie to end differently, based on the beginning of it. I felt like I was deprived of seeing a really cool version of a man going crazy.
I kept chanting to myself: Descent into madness. Descent into madness. Descent into madness. But to no avail that is not how the movie played out. Maybe the actor who played Renchard couldn’t take the madness any further. His filmography is heavily peppered with action films. So the director played to his strengths. Why should I care? Because I do. I think I’ll go watch “The Last Man on Earth” with Vincent Price. Now there’s a guy who is a genius at playing the madman.

There is an attempt here at mood and cinematography. The ever-present music. A mix of camouflages used, including urban brights.

Once the kids start cussing at about four minutes in, I lost all interest. Everyone has to drop the F word in each response to each other, which is made much worse with each of them trying to sound like Arnold Schwarzenegger in Red Heat.

There is some fighting and…go watch something else.

I have been given permission by the producer of the original show to post the complete recording of the first day on the air, 2009 March twenty-first. Unfortunately, the show is no longer on the air.

Black Rifle Radio
7:00 am on 700 AM in Utah
With Brandon Nielsen & Steve Morrison

Black Rifle Radio | 2013-03-07 | Episode 1
Download MP3 | 50 MB | Total Running Time 53:25

3:25 News hosted by Clark from Utah Shooting Sports Council. Sponsored by the Urban Warfare Center & Ops Gear. There are some audio issues with background music volume in this segment.

5:50 Short bit for advertiser Impact Guns.

6:45 A few words on the XD from Stuart Wallin, CEO of Get Some Guns & Ammo and sponsor of the talk show.

7:50 Alex Robinson of Robinson Armament (RobArms) speaks on gun rights.

9:50 Advertisements until 13:00

13:20 Steve Morrison of Mars Armament speaks with Reed Knight of Knights Armament. Topics covered include Gene Stoner, KAC quad rails, the M110 sniper rifle, AR piston systems, and manufacturing.

25:42 Advertisements until 27:58

28:20 Continuing with Reed Knight, Mark Serbu of Serbu Firearms joins the conversation. Mark mentions the .50 BMG semi-auto has a foreign military contract.

30:40 The show takes a few phone calls. instead of taking advantage of the chance to speak with Reed, Alex, or Mark – the first caller asks about the XD being made in Croatia. I found it hard to listen to, knowing these manufacturing CEO’s are sitting back just listening to this. At 36:00 they are speaking with the second caller about Obama being the best gun seller or the year. A tired joke before he even took office.

37:45 Goodbyes are said to Reed Knight and lead to advertisements until 40:17

40:30 Steve speaks with Alex Robinson about the SCAR program, the XCR-L, and XCR quick change calibers.

45:00 Short bit for advertisers Impact Guns and the Urban Warfare Center.

46:00 Mark Serbu talks about the BFG-50, .50 caliber “need”, and public sales.

49:00 Short bit for Get Some.

50:40 Radio contest announcement, closing notes, and a few mentions for sponsors.

Strangely, at no time do they announce the air date. I trust I got it correct.

I typed this up at three am, when almost finished I realized I should have cropped all the advertisements out. I likely will in the near future but all of the above time references will be invalid.

There has been some talk to bring the show back, who knows what may happen – I, for one, hope they do it. A special thanks to Brandon for allowing me to post this for everyone to hear.

With such a high-profile email announcement, I hope this won’t be a repeat of the Magpul 2010 catalog. On page 15 (below) they announced the 40 round Pmag. In the same catalog they also announced an H&K G36 Pmag, which did eventually come to fruition in 2012.
